To discourage migrants from settling within New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has offered migrants a free, one-way plane ticket to any destination of their choice.
This solution may be cheaper than sheltering them for months without an end in sight. With winter coming and shelters full, the 130,000 migrants who have arrived since last year face a harsh future that, according to Mayor Adams, this ticketing solution will solve.
“With no sign of a decompression strategy in the near future, we have established a reticketing center for migrants,” City Hall spokesperson Kayla Mamelak said in a statement. Limits on shelter stays and casework services will continue to drive down the population in the city’s care; less than 20 percent of migrants who received 30- and 60-day vacate notices have reapplied.
